George P.A. Healy leaves Boston to study in Paris.

The Boston-born painter becomes one of the foremost portrait painters of his day. He returns to America in 1855, traveling to different cities in search of commissions. Today, seven of Healy’s portraits hang in the White House and 17 in the National Portrait Gallery.
